IGNIITE 2026

Inspiring Generations of New Innovators to Impact Technologies in Energy

  • Status: Active
  • Release Date: Apr 23 2026

Program Description

The objective of Inspiring Generations of New Innovators to Impact Technologies in Energy (IGNIITE) 2026 is to support early career scientists and engineers pursuing disruptive, unconventional ideas across America’s most critical energy technology priorities. To unleash innovation and strengthen American energy dominance, IGNIITE 2026 will fund projects across five priority technical areas: energy supply chain security, including critical minerals; advanced nuclear energy, including both fusion and fission; geothermal energy; grid reliability and security; and American manufacturing competitiveness.

ARPA-E created IGNIITE after internal analysis showed that fewer than one in ten ARPA-E project leaders were within a decade of earning their Ph.D. That pattern mirrors findings from other studies that found early-career researchers often generate a disproportionate share of path-breaking ideas yet face persistent challenges in securing funding.

ARPA‑E’s IGNIITE program supports early‑career technologists as project leads and offers them financial and technical support and the chance for industry recognition. This opportunity to prove their ideas can aid the awardees in securing institutional backing, building out a team, and attracting follow‑on investment.
